1914 Santa Monica Grand Prix painting by Peter Helck (1893 – 1988) USA

Peter Helck was a very prolific and dedicated American artist, and the best known American automotive artist. It is estimated that during his life he produced over 600 sketches, drawings and paintings. The painting we are offering here was the final study for a larger artwork. It shows the 1914 Santa Monica Grand Prix race winner Eddie Pullen racing his yellow Mercer #4 to victory while chasing Ralph De Palma in his chain driven white Mercedes, both are followed by Teddy Tetzlaff’s red Fiat. The race was run on February 28th, and the event that year was ran in conjunction with the Vanderbilt Cup race. The painting is casein on board, framed and matted, and signed on the bottom left. Overall size 20.5” x 16.75”. A+ cond. Est. $4000 – $6000
